The KZNBDS Academy of Learning provides education and training for adults who suffer Blindness and Deafness disabilities later in life or who for some reason have not been able to go to school. The Academy now also provides clients with opportunities to develop essential skills enabling them to secure employment, provide for their families, and take their rightful place in society.
THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMMES ARE OFFERED:
ABET BRAILLE TRAINING »
This programme is designed to enable Blind, Deafblind and Partially-Sighted people to read and write Braille, so improving their access to information.
TRAINING IN SOUTH AFRICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (SASL) »
It is imperative to teach deaf learners how to use sign language as soon as they need it. The course has also been adapted for delivery to the hearing public who wish to learn Sign Language in order to communicate with the Deaf. Through this course we intend to raise the status of SASL as an intellectual and academic means to acquire and develop knowledge.
COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING »
Computer literacy is an essential skill that can be instilled into Blind, Deaf and Deafblind clients, enabling them to pursue Call Centre, CCTV and other technology based training.
TELEPHONY / SWITCHBOARD OPERATION »
This programme, aligned to SAQA unit standard and accredited by the Services SETA, is targeted at visually-impaired learners who will learn professional telephone skills and techniques. Graduates will increase their employability and enhance their chances of securing jobs in the call centre environment and at the front desk or switchboards of workplaces.
CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION TRAINING (CCTV TRAINING) »
Training in Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Monitoring has opened new opportunities for the employment of our Deaf clients. With modern technology spreading throughout the security industry, the employment opportunities for deaf people have increased dramatically.
COMMUNITY-BASED REHABILITATION WORKER TRAINING »
The successful implementation of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in the Zululand District has prompted Society and the KZNBDS Academy of Learning to run another train-the-trainer programme. The CBR workers successfully completing, would be able to return to their communities and provide independence and job skills training to more Visually-Impaired persons.
