With the ocean breeze, beachside views, and feel-good vibes in full swing, the energy was unstoppable! Whether walking or running, every step counted and so did every smile.
Bonus points? Everyone went home with goodie packs packed with treats and surprises! Big hearts, big turnout, and one beautiful goal. Eye Can Walk wasn’t just a walk it was a movement.

Women’s Day 2025 – KZN Blind and Deaf Society
Honouring the Women Who Make a Difference
This Women’s Day, the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society (KZNBDS) proudly paid tribute to the remarkable women who serve on our Board, volunteer their time, and support our mission — women who give so selflessly to improve the lives of the Blind, Deaf, and Deafblind community of KwaZulu-Natal.
Under the theme “Divas with Brushes”, KZNBDS hosted a dazzling High Tea that was much more than an afternoon gathering — it was a celebration of sisterhood, self-love, and splashes of colour. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere buzzed with warmth, creativity, and connection.
With the ever-charismatic Allie J as programme director, the event flowed effortlessly, blending heartfelt moments with lively entertainment.
In her opening address, Mrs. Veetha Sewkuran, President of KZNBDS, reflected on the Society’s ongoing mission to uplift and empower the blind and deaf communities through education, training, and advocacy. She expressed deep gratitude to all donors and partners, emphasising that it is their generosity and belief in the cause that make these life-changing services possible.
Two inspiring guest speakers left an indelible mark on the audience:
• Maya Jugjivan, in her thought-provoking talk “Your Sister’s Keeper”, reminded us of the strength found in women standing together, supporting, and uplifting one another.
• Dr. Kirschnee Naidoo explored the power of self-care and self-love, encouraging guests to embrace the “I am” mindset, practice the pause, and prioritise their own wellbeing without guilt.
A highlight of the afternoon was the creative session led by Brinda Naidoo of Colours of Joy. Brushes in hand, guests tapped into their inner artists, discovering hidden talents and leaving with unique creations that were as vibrant as the women themselves.
The mood was further elevated by the upbeat live music of Praneel Soondar, whose performance had toes tapping and smiles beaming across the room. Laughter, conversation, and shared moments of joy made the celebration unforgettable.
SWINGING FOR A CAUSE ⛳️☀️
What a tee-rific day it was at the KZN Blind and Deaf Society’s Annual Golf Day! With the sun shining and spirits high, 110 golfers hit the greens for a day full of great shots, even better laughs, and loads of heart.
From impressive drives to the not-so-serious mulligans (we saw you 👀), the course was buzzing with friendly competition and community spirit. But more than just birdies and bogeys, this day was all about giving back.

MOTHERS DAY BREAKFAST
A Beautiful Celebration of Strength, Love, and Mothers.
Mum knows Best! We proudly hosted 200 amazing ladies at our Mother’s Day Breakfast held at the elegant Mt Edgecombe Country Club. Our Guest of Honour, Sorisha Naidoo, touched hearts as she shared her family’s journey of accepting her father’s blindness, and spoke with warmth and wisdom about the challenges and triumphs of parenting. Adding a sparkle of glamour to the event were special guests Resh and Losh Naidoo, who shared empowering makeup and fitness tips, and inspired us all with messages of self-love and confidence. It was a morning spent in tribute of the strength, resilience, and unconditional love of mothers — especially those raising children with disabilities. The energy in the room soared as Faheem Gharafory of Pa Mi Corazon got the ladies on their feet with his fun and interactive dance session that had everyone moving and shaking. — a true highlight of the morning!
The event was beautifully steered by our gracious program director, Shaastra Nagesar, whose poise and presence brought everything together seamlessly. It was a morning filled with love, laughter, and inspiration — a heartfelt celebration of motherhood and the incredible women who lead with courage and compassion.

TALKSIGN
Signing & Stories was our main mission for our TalkSign Awareness Campaign. This year we brought together an eclectic group of writers and storytellers for our collaboration with Exclusive Books. Gcina Mhlope launched our first Talksign book reading with a most unforgettable performance filled with her beautiful stories and songs rooted in her pride for our Motherland. The campaign progressed with educational awareness sessions at schools from all over Durban, teaching little ones the importance of communicating with the Deaf and creating an inclusive community. Our Collaboration with Exclusive books ended on a high note with a stunning author, Sven Axelrad and an intimate book reading with the sublime Shubnum Khan at Santosa Coffee. It was the most perfect way to end this capture of TALKSIGN 2025. We are truly greateful for every author who joined us this Talksign season. See you next year!
DISABILITY DAY & CULTURAL MARKET
Food, Music & Summer Fun is all you need in December! The sound of people gathering created a buzz on Saturday morning. Small business owners from all over Durban gathered for our Disability Day & Cultural Market. As the smell of freshly made snacks filled the air it was time to begin with the entertainment, creating awareness of the Blind and Deaf who wowed the public with their talents. It started off with a relaxing yoga session, a fashion show showcasing our talented deaf sewing team, a demonstration from the SA Blind Cricket Team, a fierce Karate class with a few upcoming blackbelts and a finale from a blind piano player which earned him a standing novation for his incredible performance. We would like to thank all stallholders, speakers, Ngo representatives, performers and everyone who supported our amazing cause on Disability Day!
BLIND NAVIGATOR'S RALLY
START YOUR ENGINES! Our drivers were fuelled up and ready on Sunday Morning for our annual Blind Navigators Rally. A unique event that allows abled bodied drivers to receive braille written instructions from their blind co-drivers. As our skilful drivers passed through the seven check points with accuracy, the twist and turns of the road did not stop them from winning the ultimate prize. Everyone walked away a winner and had a fantastic time, awarding every driver and navigator a certificate. The KZNBDS is so grateful for everyone who was apart of our 2024 BNR.

DIWALI EXTRAVAGANZA 2024
The lighting of lamps, the clinking of champagne flutes and the enchanting notes of the sitar was only the beginning for every guest who entered our Diwali extravaganza. Champagne and a curated selection of sweetmeats welcomed our glamorous guest who came to impress, one could only feel Bollywood had come to Durban and our stars shined bright. The night began with notes of classical Indian music, setting the tone for the incredible performances of traditional and fusion dancing to celebrate the rich Indian culture of South Africa. Our President, Veetha Sewkuran touched the hearts of many with her speech, highlighting the importance of supporting our society and harnessing our advantages and skills for the future of the Blind & Deaf.
As the night kicked off and drinks started to flow, every guest was catered to a three course meal accompanied by the beautiful music and conversation. After dessert had been served, the night ended with BANG! As pledges came rolling in from all our dedicated sponsors and guests.
We would like to thank every guest who pledged on our Diwali night. Your contribution has made the most significant impact. Although the night was showered in glitz & glam, it was filled with the most generous hearts.
EYE CAN WALK 2024
As the bees and the birds gathered bright and early on a sunny Saturday morning so did all the participates for our ECW 2024, who were pumped up and ready for the 10k & 5k at Kings Park Stadium on the 14th of September. The morning smell of delicious aromatic coffee from CAFE ROSE complimented our spicy Samoosa Den which permeated the air as everyone fueled up for the race.
Our participates were entertained until the very end by no other than the amazing radio station, Lotus F.M, who played groovy tunes and brought their energizing motivation as our runners crossed the finish line and received their well-deserved goodie bags at the recovery points. This year’s ECW surpassed all expectations and was an astounding success because of ALL OF YOU!. Thank you to all our sponsors, employees, volunteers and a BIG Thank you to YOU, who supported us in giving Blind & Deaf people opportunities of independence were their disabilities will not be a setback but a comeback. Your support shines light for everyone in understanding that ‘disabled people are abled’ and they too, hold the key to our future. We hope to see you next year.
