Ms W is 47 years old. She was diagnosed with Optic Neuritis (which damaged the nerve in her eyes) 11 years ago. She became depressed and lost all self-confidence because of her blindness. Her everyday life consists of her just sitting at home doing nothing because her dad was afraid of her getting hurt if she did anything in the kitchen.
Ms W came to know about the KZN Blind and Deaf Society and the services that we provided to Visually Impaired persons. Ms W visited our Society and was eager to have Independence skills training and Skills of Daily living. She was advised to learn to use the White Cane which symbolizes Blindness so that she can navigate different surroundings; to be independent in the house by cooking, cleaning, making a cup of tea washing and to identify money like notes & coins. Ms W was able to learn all these technique’s over several training sessions. She can apply all the techniques safely and correctly. Ms W can now walk with her White Cane from her home to the shop and back independently. She’s no longer confined to her house. She also gained her confidence in her ability to do things for herself and is once again an independent person.
